Workplace Flexibilities

The Federal leave system offers a variety of leave and workplace scheduling flexibilities to assist employees in balancing their work lives, family care (child care, dependent adult care, and elder care), and personal needs. Workplace flexibilities are discretionary and administered by the Components and agencies with oversight by DCPAS. Federal employees have the right to request, without fear of retaliation or adverse employee action as a consequence of making such a request, the full use of workplace flexibilities and programs to enhance work-life.

Flexibilities include, but are not limited to, leave and workplace flexibilities to participate in wellness programs and activities, sick leave, advance sick leave, annual leave, advance annual leave, leave sharing programs, leave without pay, compensatory time off, alternative work schedules, and job sharing.
